On the afternoon of Aug. 27, 1918, a Mexican civilian sparked a small gun battle after crossing from the United States back into Mexico at Nogales, without stopping at the U.S. Customs house. If Kimberly Alford gets a call on one of her two cell phones while driving, she'll either let it go to voice mail or pull over. She wishes others did the same. "I do see a lot of people driving, using their cell phones, and you can see they're not paying attention," Alford said. "You may have to drive more defensively because of that."
