Arizona state representatives are now barred in most instances from using the state vehicle fleet, and must physically sign paperwork to be reimbursed for miles traveled on legislative business, according to a new policy announced today by House Speaker J.D. Mesnard.

Lawmakers and state employees could soon be taking an Uber or taxi to work instead of driving state vehicles under legislation approved by the House Tuesday.

The Attorney General’s Office today confirmed that it is investigating whether House Speaker David Gowan misused state vehicles and improperly billed the state for miles he shouldn’t have been reimbursed for.

A handful of House lawmakers and staff kept on trucking in state vehicles through the end of the year, according to records from the Dept of Administration. As the Capitol Times reported earlier this month, a small number of lawmakers and staffers had driven more than 25,000 miles in state vehicles, some of which were for reasons that violate state rules and laws governing fleet vehicle use.

Following allegations that he’d improperly used state vehicles for personal reasons and fired several employees and replaced them with friends, Arizona State Lottery Director Tony Bouie resigned his position to avoid being a “distraction,” according to the Governor’s Office.
