The anticipated first-ever shortage declaration of Colorado River water underscores the critical need to conserve Arizona’s most precious natural resource, and a key component to the state’s resiliency is efficient and forward-thinking management of groundwater. The 1980 Groundwater Management Act set a path for sustainability, but Arizona today faces acute challenges, including depletion, over-pumping in rural Arizona and lack of data, notably metering, to gauge the health of wells.
