All is quiet; lawmaker still worried

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//April 10, 2006//[read_meter]

Late in the afternoon, Sen. Ron Gould, R-3, says he is still concerned that trouble could break out as tens of thousands of protestors for liberal immigration laws arrive at the Capitol this afternoon.
”I don’t know what the numbers are, but if it’s as large as it looks on TV, the governor should have called out the National Guard as I requested,” he says. “This particular event, I’m concerned with public safety. If something incites this crowd, I don’t think we have enough people to contain it.”
Mr. Gould says there might be gang members in the crowd who might want to
cause trouble. “Essentially, it’s a powder keg when you get this many people together,” he says.
Mr. Gould was asked if proponents of tough immigration policy should be allowed to speak at the rally. “You mean the law-abiding side?” he says. “We speak all the time. Talk about inciting a riot — if you were to let the people who uphold the law, the anti-immigration people, speak now, that would incite a riot.”
