$200,000 in state emergency funds will pay for flood response

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//August 11, 2006//[read_meter]

Governor Napolitano on Aug. 9 declared a state of emergency in Pima and Pinal counties because of recent heavy rains and flooding, a move that will allow the use of $200,000 in state funds to pay for emergency responses and damaged roads.
Ms. Napolitano’s action follows a similar declaration by the president of the Navajo Nation, who declared a state of emergency Aug. 7 following days of sporadic rains that swelled creeks, damaged homes and stranded families in several communities.
Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. said the summer monsoon had brought much-needed rain but also triggered roadway flooding and damage in Arizona and New Mexico portions of the reservation.
Ms. Napolitano’s declaration was made in response to flooding from rain storms that hit the area between July 25 and Aug. 4.
