DISTRICT 1
Republican primary: Rep. Lucy Mason, Noel Campbell, Brian Detwiler, Andy Tobin
Ms. Mason is handily leading the election with about 61 percent of the votes counted. Mr. Tobin, a moderate Republican, is in second place, leading Mr. Detwiler by 320 votes. The top two candidates advance to the November election.
District 1 covers north-central Arizona, including Sedona, Prescott and Cottonwood. The district is 45.8 percent Republican and 26.2 percent Democrat, leaving 28 percent registered as other.
DISTRICT 7
Republican primary: Rep. Ray Barnes, Rep. Nancy Barto, David Burnell Smith, Howard Sprague
Ms. Barto will win the district, as she leads all comers with 93 percent of the votes in. She said she expected to advance, but did not expect to win overwhelmingly.
“You don’t want to take anything for granted, so we worked hard right up to the end,” she said.
She leads second-place Mr. Barnes by nearly 1,900 votes. Mr. Barnes, who has battled serious health issues this year, is beating Mr. Smith by less than 250 votes. Mr. Smith was elected two years ago, but was removed from office in March for violating state campaign spending laws.
District 7 covers north Phoenix and includes Carefree and Cave Creek. The district is 49.3 percent Republican and 24.6 percent Democrat, leaving 26.1 percent registered as other.
DISTRICT 8
Republican primary: Rep. Michele Reagan, Jim Burke, Travis Junion, John Kavanagh, Carolyn Schoenrock
Ms. Reagan will advance to the general election with Mr. Kavanagh, who says voters selected him because of his anti-illegal-immigration stance. He also credited his experience in politics.
“Voters like people that are proven in the field,” he said.
Mr. Burke finished a distant third, followed by Ms. Schoenrock and Mr. Junion.
District 8 covers most of Scottsdale north of Thomas Road, and includes Fountain Hills. The district is 50.5 percent Republican and 22.9 percent Democrat, leaving 26.6 percent of voters registered as other.
DISTRICT 17
Democrat primary: Sen. Ed Ableser, Angie Crouse, David Schapira, Rhett Wilson
Mr. Ableser and Mr. Schapira will advance to the November election.
“I focused on education first,” Mr. Schapira said. “I think that a lot of people agree with me on that.”
Ms. Crouse finished in third, followed by Mr. Wilson.
Republican primary: Rep. Laura Knaperek, Chris DeRose, Dale Despain, Dan Gransinger
Ms. Knaperek and Mr. Despain will go on to the general election in November. Ms. Knaperek, who led all candidates with more than 40 percent of the vote, said her experience made the difference with voters.
“When you’ve been around for 10, 12 years and you’ve done some good, people will remember you,” she said.
District 17 covers Tempe north of Guadalupe Road. The district is 35.6 percent Republican, 34.2 percent Democrat and 30.2 percent of the voters are registered as other.
