Key races at-a-glance

Len Munsil

Polls closed at 7 p.m. and results will begin to be posted by state officials at 8 p.m. Arizona Capitol Times will update races throughout the evening.
Governor’s Race
Seeking the GOP nomination: Goldwater, Munsil, Tupper, Harris
Insider predictions on this one range from Don Goldwater by double digits to Len Munsil in a squeaker. The gubernatorial primary usually influences voter turnout. This year, turnout is reported light, indicating little interest in any of these candidates.
Key Senate Primaries
DISTRICT 1
O’Halleran vs. Stoll
This is a pivotal race for Republican moderates. If nominated tonight, Rep. Tom O’Halleran would likely become the third Senate moderate, contingent upon victories by Sens. Carolyn Allen and Toni Hellon. Mr. O’Halleran was the target of a hard-hitting mailer this week by an organization called All Children Matter – Arizona, which touted his opponent, William Stoll, and a defender of school choice and him as an enemy of school vouchers. The organization lists a Grand Rapids, Mich. address.
DISTRICT 8
Allen vs. Rosati
Like Mr. O’Halleran and Ms. Hellon, Ms. Allen’s seat is in the scopes of conservatives who want to create a veto-proof Legislature. She is favored to win her district against the less experienced and more strident Rep. Colette Rosati.
DISTRICT 26
Hellon vs. Melvin
All Children Matter also put out a mailer for Al Melvin, who is seeking to unseat Sen. Hellon. The mailer says, “Toni Hellon votes like a liberal,” and has her photo in line with those of John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore. Ms. Hellon is the favorite.
Other Senate Contests
DISTRICT 6
Gorman vs. Carpenter
Reps. Pamela Gorman and Ted Carpenter are seeking the Republican nomination to replace Sen. Dean Martin. Both conservatives, the winner — likely Ms. Gorman — will face a Democrat in November in this heavily Republican district.
DISTRICT 22
Bedgood vs. Verschoor
Joseph Bedgood is a Republican candidate recruited by Gilbert politicos unhappy with Sen. Thayer Verschoor’s vote on county island fire protection. Mr. Verschoor says he believes he will win, as will his House counterparts, Reps. Andy Biggs and Eddie Farnsworth.
DISTRICT 28
Aboud vs. Downing
In the only Senate Democrat primary and one of the nastiest in recent memory, Rep. Ted Downing has been the subject of not only a push poll supporting Sen. Paula Aboud but a Republican robo-call push last weekend criticizing his voting record. Both liberals, the winner takes the seat. Hard to call this one.
