Key Senate Primaries

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//September 12, 2006//[read_meter]

9:15 P.M.
DISTRICT 1
O’Halleran vs. Stoll
Tom O’Halleran leads Will Stoll 50.2 percent to 43.4 percent, with 60.8 percent of polls reporting.
Mr. O’Halleran appears to have made up for what looks like the possible loss of moderate Toni Hellon in District 26. Mr. O’Halleran was the target of a hard-hitting mailer this week by an organization called All Children Matter — Arizona, which touted his opponent as a defender of school choice and him as an enemy of school vouchers. The organization lists a Grand Rapids, Mich. address.
DISTRICT 8
Allen vs. Rosati
Ms. Allen returns to fight another day, leading Ms. Rosati 55.7 percent to 44.3 percent, with 71.2 percent of the polls reporting. “Looks like I’ve got it,” she said. “It was a victory for my district.” But she added, “I am very devastated — I just got a call from Toni Hellon — and it looks like she might have lost.”
DISTRICT 26
Hellon vs. Melvin
Melvin 55.2 percent, Hellon 44.8 percent, with 65.5 percent of the polls reporting.
All Children Matter also put out a mailer for Al Melvin saying, “Toni Hellon votes like a liberal,” and has her photo in line with those of John Kerry, Hillary Clinton and Al Gore. Ms. Hellon is the favorite.
Other Senate contests
DISTRICT 6
Gorman vs. Carpenter
Gorman 67.6 percent; Carpenter 32.4 percent
Reps. Pamela Gorman and Ted Carpenter are seeking the Republican nomination to replace Sen. Dean Martin. Both conservatives, the winner — likely Ms. Gorman — will face a Democrat in November in this heavily Republican district.
DISTRICT 22
Bedgood vs. Verschoor
With 46 percent of the Maricopa County polls and 100 percent of Pinal County reporting, Mr. Verschoor leads 57 percent to 43 percent.
Joseph Bedgood is a Republican candidate recruited by Gilbert politicos unhappy with Sen. Thayer Verschoor’s vote on county island fire protection.
DISTRICT 28
Aboud vs. Downing
62 percent of the polls have reported, giving Sen. Aboud a 54.3 percent lead to Mr. Downing’s 45.7 percent. Both candidates said it was too early to call a winner at 9:15 p.m.
In the only Senate Democrat primary and one of the nastiest in recent memory, Mr. Downing has been the subject of not only a push poll supporting Ms. Aboud, but a Republican robo-call push last weekend criticizing his voting record. Both liberals, the winner takes the seat.
