Last year, Rep. Jerry Weiers conceived the Hummers to Harleys charity ride in order to help replenish food banks that had seen their storerooms depleted after hurricanes Katrina and Rita ripped apart Louisiana and Texas.
The event makes its return Nov. 4 and this time it’s paired with a Shriner’s fundraiser to provide money for sick children and their families to travel for medical treatment.
“I wasn’t even going to do it this year,” the District 12 Republican said, because of the time commitment of his re-election campaign. With no opponent, though, he said he was happy to lend assistance to the El Zaribah Shrine when it came calling, asking if the Hummers to Harleys event could team up with the Shriner’s We Ride so Kids Can Walk.
Mr. Weiers says he thinks his event was successful last year because it isn’t limited to motorcycles, like many charity rides are. Instead, anyone can participate in any vehicle, be it a family with kids in their sedan or a Corvette club or motorcyclists. He said he’s hoping to draw 800 people to the event.
“The more people, the better it’s going to be,” he said. “All we have to do is just pray we have good weather.”
The ride starts and ends at the El Zaribah Shrine, 552 North 40th St. in Phoenix. There will be raffle tickets, a silent auction, food and live music. For more information, call (602) 862-1081.
