A group that helped pass a voter-approved law banning some public affirmative action programs in Michigan will explore the possibility of expanding its efforts to other states.
The California-based American Civil Rights Coalition announced the formation of exploratory committees to look at eight states: Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota and Utah.
The states were listed in a news release from the group. The proposals could target the 2008 election.
A proposal to ban the use of race and gender preferences in university admissions and government hiring was approved by Michigan voters in November. Similar proposals passed in California and Washington in the past decade.
“We hope to have a ‘Super Tuesday’ in 2008, bringing this nation one step closer to realizing the promise of the 1964 Civil Rights Act — colorblind government,” Ward Connerly, chairman of the American Civil Rights Coalition, said in a statement.
