The 95th anniversary of Arizona statehood will be celebrated 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 14, at “Museums on the Mall: Celebrating Arizona’s Statehood” at the Capitol.
The celebration is coordinated by the Arizona Humanities Council and the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records, and sponsored by the Museum Association of Arizona, Pueblo Grande Museum, Mesa Southwest Museum, the Phoenix Zoo, and Sharlot Hall Museum. The event is free and open to the public. Parking is available in lots east and west of the Capitol and at the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum.
Arizona Chief Justice Ruth McGregor will kick off the Statehood Day program leading the Pledge of Allegiance at noon in the historic Senate Chamber. Gov. Janet Napolitano has been invited to deliver a statehood proclamation, with presentations to follow by other dignitaries and government officials. The Polly Rosenbaum Award winner will be announced, and the student winners of the Polly Rosenbaum Writing Contest will be awarded prizes for their essays on the topic of “Envisioning Arizona’s Future: The Impact of Renewable Energy to Our Environment.”
Starting at 10 a.m., Arizona’s history will be celebrated with museum exhibitors who will present artifacts and hands-on activities, historic re-enactors, and demonstrators of weaving and basket making.
