The top U.S. Border Patrol agent in El Paso has been appointed chief of the Tucson sector, the agency’s busiest for illegal immigration activity.
Robert W. Gilbert has been chief of the El Paso sector since November 2005, and replaces Chief Michael Nicley, who retires March 3.
Gilbert began his career with the agency in 1985 in San Diego, and worked in a variety of supervisory and administrative jobs in California.
In 2001, he was appointed the patrol’s Western regional chief, then was an associate chief in the Washington office from later that year until 2003.
He was appointed chief patrol agent in Houlton, Maine, in 2004 before taking over as the sector chief in El Paso.
