Rep. Steve Gallardo, D-13, and former lawmaker Alfredo Gutierrez spoke to reporters April 26 about a campaign to help some 200,000 people in Arizona apply for U.S. citizenship.
Speaking from the House lawn, Gallardo said citizenship was only the first step. The next step was to get the prospective new citizens registered to vote
More than a dozen representatives of groups backing the effort attended, including Univision, as well as Latino and community-activist groups and a union that represents service employees.
Lydia Guzman, coordinator for the Service Employees Union International, and Angeles Maldonado of Somos America (We Are America) showed reporters a packet that will be distributed to help people apply. Workshops are scheduled for Phoenix, Tucson, Yuma and Globe. The packet includes an information number — 1-888-839-8682 — and a Web site www.yaeshora.info, as well as citizenship application.
