Pinal politics could decide future of 1st Congressional District

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//July 6, 2007//[read_meter]

No longer is Flagstaff the political center of Arizona’s 1st Congressional District.
Pinal County with its unprecedented growth is rising to the occasion.
Four of the five probable Democratic candidates for the 2008 U.S. 1st District House race live in or near Pinal County.
“The population boom in Pinal really will be an important factor this time,” said Winslow Mayor Alan Affeldt, who considered running for the office but chose not to. “The demographics are shifting.”
The U.S. Census Bureau says four cities in the 1st District had populations that exceeded 25,000 in 2003. The northern portion of District 1 had the largest cities, but the southern portion had the fastest growing communities.
Republican incumbent Rick Renzi owns a home in Flagstaff, but spends considerable time in Northern Virginia.
Renzi has said he is the subject of an FBI investigation and has withdrawn from several House committees.
