U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Tom Donohue is advocating a federal solution to illegal immigration and border security.
Donohue, who spoke about the future of immigration laws in the country at an Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry breakfast on Oct. 10, said key components to any solution need to be allowing the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants currently in the country to stay and significantly increasing the number of work visas provided to foreign workers.
Those in the country who want to deport illegal immigrants would, if successful, destroy the economy, Donohue said.
“This economy is working because we have them,” he said of the immigrant workers. “If you want to round them up and send them away, it will be the largest sucking noise you ever heard.”
