A legislative panel has approved a measure that exempts senior citizens from paying a vehicle-license tax for one vehicle, as long as they are eligible for property-tax protection.
The exemption does not apply to motor homes.
The Senate Transportation Committee voted 3-2 on Jan. 15 to approve S1020, starting the long process that a bill undergoes to become law.
The bill by Sen. Jay Tibshraeny, R-21, has to get the nod from members of the Senate Finance Committee, where it is also assigned, in order to advance.
A legislative analysis of a similar bill last session stated that the financial impact cannot be determined because the state lacks data on vehicle owners who qualify for the senior property-valuation freeze. The analysis indicated that the bill would have no impact on the state’s general fund.
There are approximately 5 million vehicles registered in the state, and the average annual vehicle license tax (VLT) is about $180.
