McCain quips about Arizonans running for president

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//July 15, 2008//[read_meter]

John McCain says he's going to bypass a trend this time around that politicians from Arizona have faced in running for president.

The four Arizonans who have made presidential bids _ the late Sen. Barry Goldwater in 1964, the late Rep. Morris K. Udall in 1976, former Gov. Bruce Babbitt in 1988 and McCain in 2000 _ either failed lost in a general election or never won their parties nominations.

In speaking to 100 supporters July 13 in Phoenix, McCain quipped that Arizona may be the only state where mothers don't tell their children that they can grow up to become president.

The Arizona senator says he was going to reverse the trend in November.
