The initiative scramble: Lawsuits, certification and rejection

The initiative certification process has left everyone scrambling.

State and county elections officials were frantically trying to sort out the valid signatures on initiative petitions from the invalid ones. Initiative committees were scrambling to prove that they had submitted the required numbers under state law. And attorneys were filing legal challenges to sort out which measures do, indeed, have enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

With only a short time left to print ballots in time for the Nov. 4 general election, most of the procedural questions will be sorted out quickly so that voters can sort through the 10 or so statewide measures and make informed decisions.
