Harper interested in running for secretary of state

Arizona Capitol Reports Staff//November 14, 2008//[read_meter]

Sen. Jack Harper of Surprise has filed an exploratory committee for the position of secretary of state.
“The position (becomes) open in 2010, and that is something that interests me,” Harper said. “I have a passion for free and fair elections, and so I will be exploring whether or not there is support for me to run for that office.”
The secretary of state is next in line to become governor if the state’s chief executive is unable to complete a term.
Secretary of State Jan Brewer, whose term runs through 2010, is expected to run for governor then.
Harper, a Republican who serves as chairman of the Senate Government Committee, was re-elected on Nov. 4 by a margin of 60 percent to 40 percent over Democrat challenger Robert Boehlke.
