Gov. Ducey vetoes animal cruelty bill

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has vetoed a bill that would have created a separate set of animal cruelty laws for livestock and poultry than animals owned as pets.

The proposal by Rep. Brenda Barton of Payson was designed to establish penalties for cruelty to livestock and poultry, increase penalties for animal abuse and add provisions to current animal cruelty laws to include recklessly hoarding animals as abuse.

Ducey issued the first veto of his term for House Bill 2150 Monday.

Critics of the bill say changing the classification for livestock and poultry lowers their level of protection.

Ducey said that all animals should be protected and that increasing protections for one class of animals does not undercut protections for another.var
