Health care for military veterans needs flexibility

As a licensed social worker and proud military spouse, I know the importance of strong support systems and flexibility. A bill making its way through the legislative session in a bipartisan fashion – SB1036 – can revolutionize mental health care for our military community. This is not just a piece of legislation, but rather a compact with other states to make it easier for social workers to have mobility. It is a lifeline for families like mine who have endured the challenges of frequent relocations and the associated disruptions to critical mental health services.

My husband, a retired 20-year Infantry Marine, bravely served our country, but the toll on his mental health, particularly PTSD, has been profound. Tragically, navigating the maze of interstate licensure laws meant that when he needed care the most, we were met with barriers rather than support. The story of countless military spouses facing similar struggles echoes loudly in my ears.

SB1036 offers a beacon of hope by facilitating licensure mobility for social workers like myself, ensuring uninterrupted access to vital mental health services for our veterans and their families. This bill’s provisions not only address the acute shortage of mental health providers but also uphold the principles of public safety and client protection.

In a profession where every day counts, the compact streamlines bureaucratic hurdles, enabling us to focus on what truly matters – delivering compassionate care to those who have sacrificed so much for our nation. It is a pragmatic solution that aligns with the ethos of service and duty that defines our military community.

I urge our elected officials to seize this opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of countless military families. By voting in favor of SB1036, you will not only honor our veterans’ sacrifices but also empower social workers to fulfill their calling with unwavering dedication and effectiveness.

Together, let us ensure that no military family faces unnecessary obstacles in accessing the care they deserve.

Angela Boswell is a licensed social worker.
