The First St. Mary’s Hospital
Founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet, St. Mary’s Hospital in Tucson was dedicated on April 24, 1880, and received its first 11 patients on May 1.
Irrigators Take the Title
Harry Westfall batted .493 that year. Affectionately known as ”Fat” for his hefty physique, he was an outstanding catcher who reputedly could throw a ball to second base on a line that never rose more than three feet off the ground—out of a crouch from home plate. Ray Stone went 8-2 in the regular season that year and pitched in both playoff games.

Dedication of St. Mary’s

The Constitutional Convention

Trinidad Swilling
Trinidad Escalantes Swilling Shumaker was born in Hermosillo, Sonora, of Spanish parents. Her father, a sea captain from Cadiz named Ignatius Escalantes, and his wife, Petra Mejia, were shipwrecked off the west coast of Mexico.
