Former Phoenix Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari was confirmed as the winner of the congressional district 3 primary following the release of automatic recount results, putting her on the path to a highly likely general election victory in the heavily Democrat tilted district.

Only 42 votes now separate former Phoenix Vice Mayor Yassamin Ansari and former minority leader and Arizona Democratic Party chair Raquel Terán in the race for an essentially assured congressional seat in Democrat-leaning district 3.

Terán resigns to run for Congress
Sen. Raquel Terán resigned today. “It has been an honor and an absolute privilege to serve the people of this district and the State of Arizona,” Terán, a Phoenix Democrat, wrote in her resignation letter. The letter does not give a reason for the resignation, but Terán confirmed she resigned to focus on her Congressional bid.

State Sen. Raquel Terán, D-Phoenix, officially announced on Wednesday that she is running for Congress in 2024 in District 3, after hinting that she would in February.
Democrats eye new Congressional opening
The heavily Democratic Congressional District 3 is seemingly open for takers now that Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-AZ, has announced that he’ll run for Senate. Several Democrats are considering a run, but it’s a big risk. In such a blue district, whichever Democrat wins the primary is almost guaranteed the seat, and there’s no limit on how many primary candidates can run.
