Klein billed as right person for wrong time

When Eileen Klein moved into her new office as Gov. Jan Brewer's chief of staff, the first decoration she put up was a Kachina. In Hopi lore, upon realizing her village was under attack, she grabbed her father's bow and arrows and rushed to the defense of her people, defeating the enemy at the village's edge. It's symbolic, in a way, of Klein's new role.

Special session No. 4 will target schools, DES funding

Republican legislative leaders have reached a deal with Gov. Jan Brewer to erase a portion of the estimated $2 billion budget deficit in a special session later this month, including about $300 million in spending cuts. The plan, if carried out, would eliminate a fraction of the overall deficit, and a $1.4 billion shortfall would remain.

State Parks task force recommends $15 surcharge at MVD

A task force appointed by Gov. Jan Brewer recommends adding $14 or $15 to annual vehicle registrations to help sustain Arizona State Parks. The recommendation from the Task Force on Sustainable State Parks Funding includes the ability for vehicle owners to opt out of the fee. Those who pay it would receive free admission to state parks.

Brewer makes it official

Ending months of speculation, Gov. Jan Brewer officially filed to run for governor in 2010. Brewer's representatives filed paperwork for a candidate committee with the Arizona Secretary of State's Office on Nov. 5, and she is expected to publicly announce her candidacy later in the evening at an awards dinner in Glendale.

Brewer: Long-term solution to Arizona’s economic woes depends on jobs

While a temporary sales tax increase would help address Arizona's budget crisis, a long-term solution will depend on attracting firms that offer high-paying jobs, Gov. Jan Brewer told business leaders Nov. 4. "Our future pivots on our ability to create jobs, better jobs, permanent jobs and more of them," Brewer said at a Greater Phoenix Area Chamber of Commerce luncheon.

Gov. Jan Brewer is expected to put an end to the questions about her candidacy this evening (Nov. 5) with an announcement that she will seek a full term as governor. Brewer is scheduled to speak at Westmarc's 17th annual Best of the West awards dinner. One source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Arizona Capitol Times the announcement would be made at the event

Budget fix pitched to GOP lawmakers

The budget fix being shopped to Republican lawmakers would erase a little more than a quarter of the estimated $2 billion deficit and include about $300 million in permanent spending cuts. House Majority Whip Andy Tobin said the deal Republican leaders have reached with Republican Gov. Jan Brewer would include $140 million in cuts to K-12 education and $140 million in cuts to ADES.
