Republican Party to go after Quelland?
The law aimed at preventing Quelland from running for the Senate this year received Dept of Justice preclearance yesterday (June 28), setting the stage for a lawsuit to force him from the ballot.
That’s such an impolitic word
Although the US Supreme Court upheld the individual mandate in the federal health care reform law on the grounds that it is a tax – and referred to it as such more than 400 times in today’s ruling – Dems who showed up for a press conference this morning (June 28) steered clear from referencing it as such.
Smith ’emboldened’ by minority opinions
Kavanagh may not have been bullish on the prospects for a revival of the 2011 immigration bills that failed, but Smith said he not only plans to bring his bills back, he is hopeful that Monday’s ruling will reignite anti-illegal-immigration fervor at the Capitol. “I would certainly like to think that people would be emboldened by the decision, especially when you read what Scalia and Thomas wr[...]
Analyzed to death
After a three-hour hearing that stretched into the early evening, the Republican-led Legislative Council yesterday approved an analysis for each of the 11 ballot measures that are expected to be voted on by the public in November. Most of the proposed analyses received bipartisan support, but two ballot language descriptions were particularly contentious.
S1070 ruling: Everyone wins?
While some critics rejoiced, supporters of S1070 also claimed victory, pointing out that what they see as the law’s “heart and soul” has been upheld: the provision that requires law enforcers to inquire about people’s legal status if there is a suspicion that they are not in the country legally.
The latest in a long series
Many Republicans view Obama’s new policy as a politically calculated maneuver to solidify his support among Hispanic voters. While that almost certainly was a consideration for the president, the announcement hews closely to the administration’s previous decisions about immigration enforcement and shouldn’t come as a much of a surprise.
Pearce’s gypsy fundraiser
Two different Mexican restaurants told Pearce to scram after an anti-Pearce group organized a protest and threatened boycotts over a fundraiser scheduled for this afternoon. The event, the location of which was not initially disclosed, was initially booked at the Macayo’s on Central Avenue.
Kelly’s future uncertain
Perhaps the biggest Republican victor last night was Martha McSally, considering that Kelly has now lost twice in CD8 and expressed uncertainty last night about whether he will stay on the ballot for the new Dem-leaning CD2. He told supporters last night that “only God knows” what his future holds and that, while he “most likely” will run in the new district, he would take a few days to co[...]
Three’s a crowd, but what’s four?
If Martin withdraws, he will join the three other people who so far have withdrawn their candidacies after opponents began preparing to challenge their nominating petitions. LD25 House candidate Chris Montijo became the first to withdraw (YS, 6/6), and he has since been followed by Dem US Senate candidate David Ruben and LD24 GOP Senate candidate Scott Fistler.
Of polling samples and turnout models
Republicans cried foul this morning when Public Policy Polling released the results of a poll done over the weekend that shows Barber up by 12 points over Kelly in tomorrow’s special CD8 election. Republican operatives and Kelly supporters were quick to pan the poll’s results because it significantly oversampled Dem voters.
Horne calls accuser a politically motivated liar
Horne denied Hinchey’s allegations, calling them “fabrications.” He denied accusations that he sought to vet or weed out Democrats when he took office, and noted that, “unlike many of my predecessors,” he did not fire anyone after becoming AG.
Vote of no confidence on two ballot measures
Multiple sources say that the Arizona Chamber of Commerce’s public policy committee yesterday voted to recommend that the full chamber board oppose both the Open Government and Quality Jobs & Education initiatives when it meets next week to decide what stance to take on the slate of 2012 ballot measures.
