Gov. Jan Brewer’s budget proposal gets its first formal review at the Legislature on Tuesday.

The House and Senate Appropriations committees have scheduled a joint meeting for a briefing by the governor’s budget staff.

Brewer released her budget proposal Friday. Its cornerstone to balance next year’s budget are spending cuts that include a reduction of enrollment in the state’s Medicaid program, the Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System.

The plan would use borrowing to close most of the current budget’s midyear shortfall.

Republican legislative leaders greeted the plan warmly. Democratic leaders criticized it.
