Andy Tobin has been unanimously elected to be the new speaker of the Arizona House of Representatives as the former speaker.

He replaces Kirk Adams, who stepped down as speaker in advance of his resignation from the Legislature. Adams and his aides have not said why he is leaving, but he is widely expected to run for Congress.

Adams has a press conference scheduled later this afternoon to discuss his future plans.

Tobin, a Republican from Paulden, led the Republican caucus as majority leader in the recently completed legislative session. He is the first rural speaker of the House since the late Franklin “Jake” Flake was speaker in 2003 and 2004.

Rep. Steve Court, R-Mesa, was elected to replace Tobin as majority leader.
