Cherny dominates CD9 fundraising

Former Arizona Democratic Party Chairman Andrei Cherny raised more money than his two opponents combined in the hotly contested Democratic primary for Arizona’s 9th Congressional District. Cherny’s $431,000, which he raised in about seven weeks, dwarfed Sen. David Schapira’s $131,000 and left former Sen. Kyrsten Sinema in a distant second place in the fundraising race with $258,000.

Babeu’s fundraising down from previous quarter

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu's congressional campaign saw a marked decrease in fundraising after he faced allegations in mid-February that he threatened an ex-boyfriend with deportation, but he still raised more money during the quarter than his two Republican rivals in the race.

After Pearce, Gallardo also invited to testify on SB1070 in Congress

Sen. Steve Gallardo, a Phoenix Democrat and a fierce critic of SB1070, has been invited to testify during a Congressional subcommittee hearing about state-level enforcement of immigration laws. SB1070 architect Russell Pearce, whom Gallardo often clashed with when Pearce served in the Legislature, is also scheduled to testify at the hearing.

Senators urge action on water-rights bill in meeting with tribal leaders

WASHINGTON – Arizona’s senators urged tribal leaders Thursday to move quickly on a proposed settlement of water-rights claims so they can push the bill through Congress before this session ends. In separate closed-door meetings with Navajo and Hopi leaders in Tuba City, Republican Sens. Jon Kyl and John McCain stressed the importance of quick action, said those who attended the meetings.

McCain, Kyl to talk water rights with tribes today

TUBA CITY a�� Arizona's two U.S. senators are meeting with tribal leaders today to discuss a water rights settlement. Jon Kyl introduced legislation earlier this year that would settle the Navajo and Hopi claims to the Little Colorado River system. The tribes would get groundwater delivery projects in exchange for giving up further claims to the water.
