TUCSON — The Arizona Republican Party is spending big on attacks on former Gabrielle Giffords aide Ron Barber in the 8th Congressional District special election.

Federal Election Commission records show the state GOP spent $47,000 on mailers and automated phone calls attacking Barber.

The mailer accuses the Democrat of working to pass policies that hurt the economy and families, including cuts to Medicare.

Barber spokesman Rodd McLeod tells the Arizona Daily Star that the claims are not true. He says Barber has pledged to support Medicare and fight against cuts in benefits for seniors.

Giffords resigned in January to focus on her recovery from a January 2011 shooting.

Four Republicans are running in next week’s primary. The special general election is June 12.
