Secretary of State Jan Brewer announced on Nov. 28 the state’s campaign finance report filing system will be completely updated and available for use by early January.
The upgrade will replace the current system that requires candidates and political committees to download software to their computers with a Web-based system easier to use for committees and the public, said Brewer.
The system will allow committees to have multiple users, issue notifications of events and filing deadlines, and provide the public with a more thorough overview of political committees’ finances, she said.
“Having a Web-based campaign finance system will greatly simplify the manner in which political committees report their contributions and expenditures, and provide the public better and more comprehensive information,” said Brewer.
Deputy Secretary of State Kevin Tyne said the office has saved possibly hundreds of thousands of dollars by creating the new system itself instead of relying on outside contractors.
“Secretary Brewer’s IT (information technology) staff has worked diligently to make these added improvements,” he said, adding that the system will include an improved search process and additional screens.
Mike Becker, a spokesman with the Citizens Clean Elections Commission, said candidates have had difficulties with the current, less user-friendly system.
The new upgrades, compatible with both PC and Apple computers, will be “fantastic,” he said.
