The Senate has hired a House staffer to become the chamber’s new rules attorney.
Stacy Weltsch, who is the House Judiciary committee analyst, accepted the offer Dec. 17, said Wendy Baldo, the Senate’s chief of staff.
Weltsch replaces longtime staffer Joni Hoffman, who had left to become in-house counsel for the Arizona League of Cities and Towns.
The rules attorney staffs the Senate Rules Committee and provides legal guidance regarding the constitutionality of legislation. The committee reviews all bills for approval before they reach the floor for debate and a final vote.
Lawmakers also rely on the attorney’s advice regarding parliamentary procedures.
Weltsch graduated from the Arizona State University of Law in 2007, and has served as House Judiciary committee analyst since then. She also worked as a law clerk at the Office of the Federal Public Defender and at the Arizona Supreme Court.
