The Arizona Capitol Times’ “Morning Scoop” video series returned from its summer hiatus on Wednesday with a panel discussing the economic effects of immigration enforcement.
“The Cost of Deportation: Economic Impacts on Arizona” featured moderator Steve Goldstein asking questions to state Sen. Annalise Ortiz, Tucson City Council Member Miranda Schubert, Gauri Agarwal from the Arizona Center for Economic Policy and Rodrigo Dorador from Dominium.
The panelists discussed recent data suggesting that immigration enforcement has had far-reaching financial effects on the economy. The Economic Policy Institute released a “Cost of Deportations Calculator” that tracks how much money is going toward immigration enforcement, and presents other possible uses for those funds.
Brookings, meanwhile, released its report “Shock, Awe, and Economic Fallout” that found a larger drop in employment in cities that Immigration and Customs Enforcement targets most.
“What the data is showing us is that immigration enforcement does not happen in a vacuum,” Agarwal said. “Aside from affecting the people directly targeted, it also affects workers, businesses and families around Arizona.”
“The Morning Scoop” will return at 8 a.m. on Oct. 28 with a discussion on Arizona’s tribal water rights settlement. Panelists include Hopi Tribe Chairman Lamar Keevama; San Juan Southern Paiute Vice President Johnny Lehi Jr.; Crystal Tulley-Cordova, the principal hydrologist at the Navajo Department of Water Resources; Central Arizona Project General Manager Branda Burman; and Andy Muller, the general manager of the Colorado River Water Conservation District.
